The ice-to-coffee ratio is one of the most overlooked variables in iced coffee — yet it directly determines whether your drink is bold and satisfying or watery and disappointing. Too much ice dilutes your coffee into flavored water; too little and your drink warms up before you finish it. Here's how to find the perfect balance for every iced coffee drink.

Why the Ratio Matters

Ice melts. As it does, it adds water to your drink — diluting the coffee concentration. The amount of ice you use, the size of the ice cubes, and how quickly you drink your coffee all affect how much dilution occurs. Understanding this lets you build your drink to account for dilution rather than being surprised by it.

The Three Approaches to Ice-to-Coffee Ratio

Approach 1: Standard Ratio (Drink Immediately)

Build your drink at normal coffee strength and use enough ice to chill it, planning to drink it within 5–10 minutes before significant dilution occurs.

Ratio: 150–200g ice per 250ml total drink volume
Best for: Iced Americanos, iced lattes you'll drink quickly
Trade-off: Drink becomes watery if you sip slowly

Approach 2: Concentrated Coffee + Standard Ice (Best for Slow Sippers)

Brew your coffee at 1.5–2x normal strength, then pour over standard ice. As the ice melts, it dilutes the concentrate back to normal strength. This is the most reliable method for consistently great iced coffee.

Ratio: 150–200g ice per 150–180ml of double-strength coffee
Best for: Pour over iced coffee, iced Americano, anyone who drinks slowly
How to: Use 1:7 or 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio instead of the standard 1:15

Approach 3: Coffee Ice Cubes (Zero Dilution)

Freeze brewed coffee into ice cubes. As they melt, they add more coffee flavor instead of diluting. The drink actually gets more flavorful as it sits.

Best for: Anyone who hates dilution; slow sippers; those who want maximum flavor
How to: Brew a strong batch of cold brew using the Organic Swiss Water Process Decaf Cold Brew Coffee, freeze in ice cube trays, use in any iced coffee drink

Iced Pour Over (Flash Brew)

  • 20g coffee
  • 150ml hot water for brewing
  • 150g ice in the receiving vessel
  • Total volume: ~300ml (ice melts into the brew)

Ice Size and Its Effect on Ratio

  • Large cubes (2-inch): Melt slowly — use standard ratio; drink stays strong longer
  • Standard cubes: Melt at moderate speed — use slightly concentrated coffee
  • Crushed ice: Melts very fast — use double-strength coffee or drink immediately
  • Coffee ice cubes: No dilution — use standard coffee strength

The Simple Rule

The faster your ice melts, the stronger your coffee needs to be. Large ice + concentrated coffee = a drink that stays great from first sip to last. This is the formula every great iced coffee shop uses — and now you can use it at home. ☕
